finally women quote

first posted on facebook

this week, the german government decided to introduce the gender equality law, which imposes big (not middle-size or small) companies to put women in high administrative positions, in a certain percentage.

i was, for a long time, skeptic that such a law would bring change. but then i looked around me. i know just one (1!!) woman in a high position, in all companies i work with – and i work with some of the biggest companies in germany.

during the schroeder era, there have been some attempts to impose such a quote. the backlash from the companies was so big, that it failed. almost failed. it produced the so-called “agreement between the government and the economy for equal chances”. in this agreement, the representatives of both parties agreed to introduce individual quotes. what happened until this day? NOTHING.

why? because:
1. men will not give up power willingly. we live in a sexist world, where the word feminist is still considered a threat and not a path to normality and equality.
2. most european maternity laws (including the german one) do not support women to go back to work soon after giving birth. the lack of nursery places and the long maternity leaves basically tell a woman to stay home. this way most women cannot go back to work in under a year after giving birth. and employers do not want to give any kind of high positions to a woman.

therefore just sitting and waiting will do not much for women. and just as the use of car seatbelt was imposed – because nobody used it otherwise – and now it saves lives and is considered (by most people) a normal thing, the “women quote” will do the same. it is not nice, it is not the perfect solution, but it is the only one which will get things rolling.

i believe that this is a start for changing other laws and misconceptions.

what worries me most it not that men find it bad or that the left-winged party thinks is bad (although they have such a quote themselves ) or that there is skepticism generaly. what worries me is that there are women out there thinking that this is bad. that this move towards equality is bad. there are still many women who need to understand that men are not better or entitled to push women aside just because they find it easier. they are only just as good as women are. and women need to stand up and fight for this.

[vatican] muzeele vaticane

[italia] orvieto
